I anchor the free write to something specific: a memory, a question, a neighborhood detail, a piece of music stuck in my head. Personal authenticity gives the poem its spine. I ask myself simple questions: What am I actually feeling? Where do I feel it in my body? What moment from my life shows this feeling instead of explaining it? I aim to arrive early, usually 20-30 minutes before sign-ups close or the show begins. That buffer gives me time to find the bathroom, locate the stage, and notice how the room feels. I look for the sign-up sheet, ask where performers wait, and scan the space for stairs, cables, or anything that might trip me on the way to the mic.

Before the show starts, I pay attention to sound. If there is a mic check, I step up, say my name, and read a few lines. I adjust the stand so the mic sits just below my mouth, not at my nose or chest. I keep a small distance-about a fist away-so my breath does not spike the sound.

Nerves usually rise as my name gets closer on the list, so I rely on simple body resets. I step aside from the crowd if possible and run through a short sequence:

Grounding: Plant both feet on the floor. Notice the weight in my heels and toes.
Breathing: Inhale through the nose for four counts, hold for four, exhale through the mouth for six. Repeat a few rounds.

If a line unexpectedly lands hard-a murmur, a soft "mm"-I give it an extra breath before moving on.
